Willamette Mercury Phase I Study 2002 - 2003

The Willamette Basin Mercury Study Phase I included monitoring water, sediment, and fish throughout the basin in 2002 and 2003. Ambient water monitoring occurred quarterly and storm water monitoring occurred twice. Sediment and Fish monitoring occurred once.

Willamette Mercury Phase II Study 2007 - 2008

In this study, water samples will be collected from sites throughout the basin to better understand the spatial and temporal correlation between mercury and methyl mercury in the water column, and the point source load contribution. A final objective of this study is to further identify and characterize potential sources of mercury in the Willamette River Basin and to assign load and waste load allocations, if necessary. Samples will be collected from distinct locations along the mainstem Willamette, the mouths of major tributaries, near point sources and areas of known sources of mercury and methyl mercury. A reference site on the Middle Fork Willamette River above the Hills Creek Reservoir was selected as a background site for the basin. Temperature, pH, redox, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity and conductivity will be measured in the field by DEQ staff. In addition, water samples will be analyzed at a contract lab for total methyl mercury, dissolved methyl mercury, total suspended solids, hardness, total organic carbon, dissolved organic carbon and sulfate. Monitoring in the Willamette Basin will start in March 2007 and terminate in March 2008, for a total of five quarters.
