Featured Fleet: One Green World NurseryOne Green World Nursery, founded by Jim Gilbert, publishes 80,000 catalogs annually, selling plants to customers across the United States. The nursery grows a diverse selection of unique fruiting plants. But it does more than grow plants. It challenges traditional growing practices by mulching nursery rows with sawdust conserving water and eliminating herbicides, and planting a grass cover to suppress weeds and prevent soil erosion. Then there is their deep commitment to reduce their carbon footprint: for many years, employees have used bicycles and electric carts for onsite transportation. For the past seven years they've run all off-road farm equipment, tractors and delivery and business vehicles on B99 and B50. The nursery also participates in the Climate Friendly Nurseries Project. They use 100% clean wind electricity and produce 10% of their electricity needs through an onsite solar photovoltaic array. One Green World has received numerous recognitions including the Business Recycling Awards Group for recycling plastics, potting soil, cardboard, paper, and metal. They were awarded the BEST Practices for Sustainability for Small Companies award for commitment to energy conservation, alternative transportation, water efficiency and sustainable purchasing among other practices. In 2006, they became the first nursery to receive the Salmon-Safe certification. Besides all of this, they still find time to actively support the community with projects such as healthy watersheds, local edible landscapes and community and school gardens. One Green World exemplifies sustainability in everything it does—from agricultural practices to transportation choices to cleaner fuel use to a commitment to clean energy and reducing its carbon footprint. One Green World's sustainability roots run deep; they truly live up to their name and the Fleet Forward program is proud to include them as a member.
